IT could be bus wars! Two Colchester bus services are preparing to go head-to-head with routes that are almost identical – stopping just one minute apart.

First buses announced it is launching a new service, number 60, which will run between Prettygate and Colchester town centre via Maldon Road every ten minutes Monday to Saturday.

This will be in direct competition with the number 1 service run by Network Colchester which runs from Shrub End to the town centre, then on to Greenstead.

It is believed that buses from the different companies will be just one minute after each other at some stops.

Peter Kay, secretary of Colchester Bus Users’ Support Group (C-Bus), said: “The route followed by the 60 will be exactly the same as Network Colchester’s number 1 service, that runs between the town centre loop and Prettygate.

“The 60s are completely in parallel and timed to arrive one minute before the one.”

Bob Dorr, of First, said: “As a commercial organisation we have always got to look and see where there are gaps in the service we provide and try to identify new operations.

“We recognise there are other services in the area but the service we have introduced is different and useful in linking to the town centre.

Bus director Bill Hiron, of Network Colchester, said: “Competition is good for us and good for our customers."

Competition and free enterprise in business is fine and in many cases the prices reflect the competition. However, for public transport it is barmy!

In the case of the bus companies, I doubt it if the fares will alter on the buses that run this route. If they did then they would be competative and passengers would choose the cheapest.

Otherwise it is pointless running two services so close together on the same route. Where is the sense in that?

I am grateful that the bus company restored the 65 bus timetable to ten minutes from the unpopular 20 minute service. Now passengers can sit down, rather than standing or often watching a full bus pass by.

If the bus company had interleaved the no 60 service, the waiting time for passengers would be halved. What a waste of fuel as the buses will end up following each other.

We will all end up paying for this ridiculous misuse of resources. If only the council and bus company talked to each other we could avoid this unnecessary conflict.

Tit for tat. Network introduced Service 6 and changed route of the 8 to mirror the 65, surprised it took to long for First to hit back.

Can someone tell me why First charge £1.40 from North Station to Town Centre whilst Network Buses charge £1.10.

Chambers andHedinghams only charge 90p.

Surely First are losing customers due to this price variant

One of the bus company spokesmen said in the paper that people will always use the bus company who provides the best service. No, no!
Passengers will use whichever bus comes along first - we don't care what company it is!

Whilst it is nice to have extra buses running on this route it would be far better to have extended it out beyond the Town Centre to the Railway Stn. &/or too the Tolgate via Peartree Rd., also due to the endless roadworks 'Network'buses very often travel in convoys & therefore extra services doesn't mean more frequency!

This appears this is the same sort of tactic that Stagecoach used in North Kent a few years ago. They ran a bus just in front of the regular bus and when the regular bus was withdrawn, no passengers, Stagecoach had a clear field to run and charge what they liked.
I thought the Council controlled Colchester borough fares?

Having used buses in Essex,Suffolk and Peterborough in recent weeks I think we are far from getting the benefits of privatisation promised by the Tories back in the eighties.

The then opposition Labour party (if I recollect correctly) then said they would correct the errors of privatisation but 11 years on they seem not to have even begun to produce the "integrated transport" John Prescott personally told me they believed in. That was on the day I had a chance meeting with him at Stratford on the day, as a publicity stunt, he rode a Jubilee line train in the early morning before the line extension was officially opened.

I think the structure of transport authorities is wrong. It seems to me places like London are improving where there is one transport authority and all bus fares are the same. I also think the situation is better in places like Peterborough, where I think a difference with Colchester is the fact that there is Unitary local Government.

Here in Essex we have different policies in adjoining district/borough council areas and also conflict with County Council policies which have overall responsibility for public transport.

Obviously this is not going to be corrected overnight but that it must be corrected is crucial to our planet's future, so we best start now. Also any policy changes need to take proper account of the users of the policy and so consumer groups should have an opportunity to be active participants in policy development.
